We called her "Grandma Heidi" because young Billy Hasel (her grandson) could not say "Ida". She lived much of her life in Marcola, before moving north to Portland and Vernonia. In Vernonia, their home burnt, destroying her grandfather George Thompson's discharge papers from the U.S. Union army, signed by Abraham Lincoln.
One Ida's hobbies was genealogy. She also wrote a poem about the city of Springfield, Oregon, which was published in the local paper. In later years, she would visit her niece, Thelma Mason Gates in Marcola, and walk in the annual "Mary Cole Days" parade in Marcola, Lane County, Oregon. She even served as the parade's Grand Marshall one year.
She babysat all of her life, beginning with her own children, and extending to her grand and great-grand children almost until her death.
